Oh Dear. BT Price Increase proves there is no better time to change to SIP, or in English Internet connected telephone services.

Internet telephony can guarantee lower charges, bundles call costs and a step up in technology and features there is no better time.

Things you need to be aware of:

  • Current contracted terms with BT
  • Compatibility with current telephone system – don’t throw the baby out with the bath water and replace a perfectly serviceable system.
  • Believe the hype about poor reliability from Internet voice, VoIP – It is more reliable and location agnostic.
  • Dedicated Broadband is required – Nope, not the case. A good broadband connection, Fibre as an example, then that is adequate for Data and Voice.

Switching to an Internet based telephone system, either on premise or Cloud is a simple exercise, mainly because your provider will do all of the work.

What to look for!

Hosted / Cloud providers.

I believe paying by the extension can be a costly exercise, more relevant if you are small and plan to grow. Far better to pay for a service with unlimited extension capability and buy or rent the handsets of your choice. If you can avoid proprietary or single manufacturer suppliers, you will get caught in a trap of buying one make or model of telephone.

The requirements are not dissimilar to a Cloud service. A negative to an on premise installation is that inbound and outbound calls are reliant upon the business broadband being active. No Broadband = No Calls. Again all below are true.
